No need to reach for painkillers the next time a backache flares. Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh found that when people with back, neck, or other joint pain took 1200 mg. of fish oil daily for 75 days, 60% of them reported significant pain relief – enough to decrease or discontinue their use of pain medications. That’s because the fish oil’s omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) block pain-triggering inflammation. Note: Talk to your doctor before supplementing if you take warfarin or other blood thinners.
The next time you accidentally brush up against a hot skillet or nick your finger chopping veggies, reach for a jar of honey. When applied topically, honey creates a protective barrier for minor burns and cuts, plus its antibacterial compounds kill germs that can cause infection. What’s more, honey’s antioxidants help stop damaging inflammation that slows healing. Simply apply a coat of honey to your wound, then cover it with a bandage. Tip: Opt for raw honey since processing destroys the sweetener’s protective compounds.
